Watch anime with Japanese w/ Eng subtitles on, that or any Akira Kurosawa film in the original Japanese. It sounds weird, but as you get further on in your studies, you'll start being able to pick words out of sentences without looking at the subtitles, and build up the vocabulary from there. Unfortunately it also depends on the skill of the translators.
