Aloha Doyle, I'm assuming that you've already read the "Questions 1" link in "How TBT Works" (I really need to get some more pages up in that section). So I'll try not to repeat any of the explanations given there. The most succinct analogy I can offer is this: the 'errant' Divinities are akin to rotten apples in a bushel of good apples. That is to say, they cannot challenge the Gods directly on a power vs. power basis, (ie, a battle) but they can challenge the Gods indirectly...because, as rotten apples, they can spoil the whole bushel (the 'bushel' being all the sentient species that are candidates for the Next Level). To go further with the agricultural metaphor, the Gods and Demons function as 'Divine Gardeners' in a sense. They do what they can to encourage the growth of mortal species towards the Next Level...akin to the gardener's practice caring for her or his plants: putting up insect nets, spraying for intrusive flora, sheltering the grove against windstorms, caring individually for weaker plants, etc. However, if one of the species goes 'rotten', the Divines have to remove it from the rest, so that the corruption doesn't spread. This was explained several times in TBT by Belldandy and others. This 'weeding out' process is a strong consideration when one examines why the Earthrealm in TBT is on a century-long probation. The 1947-2047 probation was enacted because, if the human species can develop weapons of mass destruction while lacking the wisdom of 'weapons of mass cooperation', then they will need to be 'edited' out of the picture. Otherwise, they become errant divinities (i.e.: they become so tech advanced, they appear to be God-like to 'lesser' species). Appearance is the key phrase here: to the Gods and Demons, such 'errant Divinities' are obviously semi-Divine because they lack the 'essentials' of Divine-hood; but to mortal races, the 'errant Divinities' could easily be perceived as 'Gods' (they're telepathic, have incredibly extended lifespans, can travel between stars, etc). As mentioned in TBT, if humanity cannot pass the probation, they will be 'downsized' by a series of cataclysms, in order to prevent them from advancing into a telepathic, star-faring semi-Divine culture of moral inepts who accomplish little besides spreading a sordid and malfeasant ethos in their wake. Obviously, species like these do not appreciate the value of aspiring towards the Next Level, so they must be dealt with accordingly. Their recalcitrant nature prevents them from being 'rehabilitated' directly by the Gods or Demons. But by drastically measures such as altering their population, tech and overall viability...they are allowed a chance to 'start over'. The Gods and Demons would prefer to avoid genocide at all costs. Of course, they are protecting their own interests by 'taming the savages'. But also, they are protecting the newer species from being preyed upon by the 'errant Divinity' species. I hope this brief explanation helps clarify the dynamic...
